Jose Canseco Held at the Mexican Border for Carrying Fertility Drugs
Major League is again at the limelight when Jose Canseco was detained at the Mexican border for carrying drugs without prescription. He was detained at San Diego border crossing according to the report featured by Pauline Repard in the Union-Tribune. Canseco’s lawyer Gregory Emerson confirmed that Canseco was held by immigration officials by attempting to carry female fertility drugs from Mexico as stated in the report.
According to Repard’s report, Canseco was given a notice to show-up in federal court, which is claimed by the Customs Enforcement Spokeswoman Lauren Mack to be related in smuggling violation. “It’s a direction we have, to issue a notice to appear rather than make an arrest when a smaller volume of items are being smuggled,” Mack uttered. She also added that Canseco was not actually filed with any charges. However, Repard reported that she refused to elaborate on the accusation.
Meanwhile, Christian Red of Daily News also reported that Canseco as a self- proclaimed “Godfather of Steroids” was detained for almost 10 hours at the border crossing of San Isidro. This happened after his car was searched and was found with human chorionic gonadotropin, which is prohibited if given without prescription, as stated in the report of the Associated Press (AP).
Relating to this issue, Emerson was said to refuse to give a comment whether Canseco was transporting the banned drug of World Anti-Doping Agency to be used by men. However, Canseco himself admitted for not having a prescription for the drug he carried. He said, “I am using it for my own use because I am currently on a hormone therapy plan because my testosterone levels are extremely low because of my past steroid use. He also added that he was in Mexico to look for “inexpensive dental implant work” according to the Red’s report in Daily News. Essentially, Red’s report explained that such drug helps in restoring the production of testosterone, which is commonly lost in steroid users.
The claim of Canseco was supported by the statement of the anti-doping expert Dr. Gary Wadler. Wadler clearly stated to the News HCG that the drug carried by Canseco is taken by steroid user who aims to avoid ‘testicular atrophy” as well as by those men who have a low level of testosterone and sperm, which is the normal result of hard intake of steroids.
Because of the claim of Canseco’s party, Red’s report said that he was immediately released after he approved the ICE agents to perform a search to his home in Los Angeles. The home of Canseco was searched by nearly 10 ICE agents in the presence of his attorney as mentioned in the report. Unfortunately, not a single prohibited drug was found in it.
Looking back, Canseco is the man who confessed his involvement in steroids use during his baseball career. In fact, all of the baseball fans are expected to know his best-selling book, which was published in 2005 with the title “Juice.” Here he claimed that almost 85 percent of the players in major leagues are using steroids. Although, he did not yet mentioned there that he himself is also a steroid user. It was also in the same year when he testified about the use of banned drugs in baseball during a congressional hearing. Legitimately, Canseco is known for his American League MVP title in 1988 and American League Rookie in 1986 while he played for the Oakland Athletics.
