European Indoors Championship Conquered by Chambers but Steroid Still Tagged on His Name

dwain chambers got gold in european indoors championship but steroid still an issue Dwain Chambers is at his best again when he won the 60 meters European Indoors title a few days ago. He defeated Italian Fabio Cerutti and Emanuele Di Gregorio. The European Athletics Indoor Championships was held in Turin, Italy. He finished in a time of 6.46 seconds ahead of his competitors. This gold is the first legal and uncontested win in his career. His win is the pride of Great Britain in this event which is considered as the worst performance for the entire delegation of the country.

The U.K. sprinter became controversial when he was tested positive for the steroid THG in 2003 and was banned for two years. He was the first athlete banned for the designer steroid THG. The steroid was distributed by the BALCO which has been the center of investigations of US probe for prescribing banned substances to top athletes not just in athletics but as well as in major league baseball, NFL, and boxing.

Dwain Chambers was stripped of his title in 2002 European 100-meter category in Munich. His British 100-meter record of 9.86 seconds was also annulled. He had to return his gold and his name removed from the records. The worst sanction that he got was a lifetime ban from the Olympics. Chambers still owes the international governing body £120,000 from prize money won on that particular event.

Chambers is happy that he is on the right track again after resting for 2 years. In an interview, he said that it feels so good to get back on the medal rostrum again and start rewriting his name in the history books for the right reasons. “I just hope people let the past be the past now. It’s gone on for far too long. But again these are things I’m going to have to deal with for a while until it does start turning around.”

He commented on the issue whether he is clean of any performance enhancing drugs in this event. “If you run slowly, they say you are rubbish. If you run fast, they say you are on stuff. “It shouldn’t be like that. I am not failing any drug tests. I am doing my sport clean,” Chambers replied.

His book Race Against Me is already out in the market which may be a target of sports organizations like IAAF. This contains steroid related topics including his use of performance enhancement drugs. He admitted taking up more than 300 different concoctions of banned substances in 2002. The doping products includes THG, EPO and HGH which cost him US$30,000 a year. “All I’ve done is give a reflection of what’s happened in the past. It has no reflection of what’s coming in the future.” He believes that his disgraced past can be a lesson for others.

The legal department of (IAAF) International Association of Athletics Federations will study the book and consider whether Chambers should be punished for “bringing the sport into disrepute. According to IAAF spokesman Nick Davies, “We will get a copy of the book and ask our legal experts to study it.” It is also expected that the case of Chambers will be tackled in the IAAF meeting in Berlin this month. If the sport organization found that Chambers violated the IAAF rules, he can be sanctioned again which includes competition ban.
