Ex-Union Chief Marvin Miller Says Drug Testing Should be Considered as Solidarity Threat

Ex Union chief Marvin Miller stand on drug testing in MLB You don’t have to read a lot for you to understand that criticisms are rising all over the world when it comes to pursuing Barry Bonds. Ex-Union Chief Marvin Miller finally broke his silence by telling a New York Times interview that he considers this happening as the most disillusioning experience there is.

Miller was actually the executive director starting the year 1966 to 1982. He was also the one who negotiated the union’s primary collective bargaining agreement that gained the successful assault against the reserve clause. The man said that the case of the government which was placed against Barry Bonds, is now approaching persecution. He further said that he is waiting for right-wing Republicand such as Bush to finally act in the most fitting manner.

Aside from Bonds, Miller also criticized Donald Fehr when the latter agreed upon the mandatory drug testing. Miller suggests that doing drug testing can in fact weaken the union. Never in his entire life he said had he become a drug testing advocate because he believes that it is a source of people’s headache. He further said that it won’t help if the government dips its finger into this controversy because there is a tendency that the government will only look for eminent targets and the media will just go along with it.

In the same article, Miller said that the real indication of the problem was when Alex Rodriguez openly admitted that he tested positive for steroid use in the year 2003. Miller asked why from among all of the 104 players, why was it that only the name of Rod was hauled in the issue? Miller believes that the reason is because Rodriguez is a prominent individual and the Justice Department is only after publicity so it will chase on big names.

If in case the government finally understands that they will fall short in putting Bonds into jail then the next thing that they will do is to go after Alex Rodriguez. The government is powerful and they are more concerned in nailing down a person rather than going out to know what’s happening to the world, Miller further added. It has already been two decades after Miller retired from the position of executive director. And at present, there are new realities and drug testing is considered one of them.

A lot of players as well as baseball officials have been brought before high-profile Congressional committees so they will be informed about the need for drug testing. For his part Fehr, quoted in a telephone interview, said that people have the need to respect what the players want to do. He further added that every time something controversial took place, the duty of the people in the sports arena is to stand up and back up the accusation.

It seems like Miller is also standing up for what he believed since he said that if he was still the executive director, he would campaign to have the mandatory testing out of the next contract. “I would never have testing,” he reiterated. During his direction, the union became the strongest one there is in United States because of unwavering solidarity and trust.
