McNamee Claims Clemens was Injected on Several Occasions
In a recent interview posted on SportsImproper.com, Brian McNamee reiterated that he injected Roger Clemens with steroids, at least a dozen times and at different places, included at Yankee Stadium. Although McNamee has refused offers to from CBS’s “60 Minutes” and ABC’s “Nightline”, he chose to speak with SportsImproper.com.
Richard Emery, lawyer for McNamee said that McNamee did not have any stake or financial interest in the website, and that the site was owed by one of McNamee’s friends. Emery added that McNamee was only helping out a friend by generating interest in the site. Legal experts, however, gave the opinion that McNamee’s actions may leave him vulnerable when questioned for his credibility as a witness in Clemens’s perjury case. Clemens’s is under investigation by a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C. for lying under oath in front of a congressional committee.
During the congressional hearing, Clemens denied having used any steroid or human growth hormone (HGH). McNamee was also present during the said congressional hearings. McNamee mentioned that he had injected Clemens while at his apartment, at Yankee Stadium while Clemens was in the hot tub and once in Toronto for a road game. He also mentioned that one of the needles he used to inject Clemens has been turned over to government investigators. In the SportsImproper.com post, McNamee was quoted as saying that “One of the needles I gave the government was used to inject Clemens with steroids in either July or August of 2001. The place was his high-rise apartment, which is located off the corner of 90th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan.
“That day, he laid out the drugs, dropped his trousers and I did as he asked, that is, inject him with steroids. Afterwards, he told me to get rid of the needle. I went into the kitchen and found an empty Miller Lite can in a wastebasket under the sink. I put the used needle into the can because it was actually hazardous material at that point and I didn’t want anyone to get hurt by sticking themselves. He told me to throw it away but I kept it instead.” He also recounted several instances wherein he injected Clemens while on the road. “When he was playing with Toronto,” McNamee said, “he provided the drugs and I injected him when he was in Canada. “One time, on the road, I was in his hotel room and he called hotel management and had them bring up a bottle of alcohol. I swabbed the injection site with it and afterwards used some more of it to clean it up.
”When asked about the interview, the lead defense attorney for Clemens said, “I smilingly have no comment.” Clemens has repeatedly stated that he was injected with vitamin B-12 and lidocaine, a painkiller. On the other hand, McNamee’s lawyer, though having some concerns that McNamee has not stopped speaking in public, he did note that “[McNamee's] been consistent about injecting Roger, and that is what matters.”
