The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), two powerful organizations with their own bureaucracies and hierarchies are at odds with each other when it comes to implementing drug testing policies. WADA thinks that football players should be subject and available to drug testing for the entire year not just during football season, while FIFA believes that its football players should only be available for drug testing when they are within the premises of the football stadium or the training complex.
FIFA’s representative issued a statement with the UEFA insisting that on the juridical and political level, subjecting the players to drug testing 365 days of the year shows a lack of respect for the private lives of the players, which is a fundamental element of individual liberty, and that kind of drug policy is thus questionable.
Critics of FIFA, however, find this reluctance a bit hypocritical as FIFA signed up to the WADA’s anti-doping code and therefore should subject itself to its rules and policies. After all, joining WADA is not mandatory; an organization is either in or out, and FIFA decided years ago that it will join WADA probably for reasons of finance and credibility. If it is credibility that FIFA is seeking for, then non-scheduled random drug testing of its athletes shouldn’t be a problem. The point of the anti-doping code is to catch and deter dopers in the sports world, and how can this be done successfully if the athletes know when they will be tested? If they can anticipate when they will be tested, then they can just as easily stop using steroids for those periods and use during off-seasons or training.
Contesting WADA’s policy of randomly testing players all throughout the year shows how FIFA wants to be a member of WADA only for the benefits (such as membership of the Olympics movement), perks and good PR that comes with it but without the inconvenience of needing to abide to some rules. FIFA must be really way over its head to think that WADA can exempt football from the “whereabouts” code, which is akin to granting the weightlifting community from the “testosterone” code.
One possible reason that FIFA stubbornly insists that it be exempt from this rule is the findings of a study conducted by a French anti-doping agency. The study involved testing hair samples of 138 french professional athletes, which included 32 football players. Unlike urine samples where steroid evidence can be washed out in a matter of days, hair samples are able to retain traces of drugs for a longer period. Seven football players tested positive for some forms of banned substances according to the results. This result is greater in proportion than that found in other sports such as rugby and cycling. In the past, a lot of cyclers have been notoriously known to abuse banned substances and these new numbers that put football higher than cycling in drug use is indeed a cause for alarm and suspicion.
Steroid use in professional wrestling is becoming a hot issue again. The recent news on the unexplained death of two pro wrestler, Andrew “Test” Martin and Abismo Negro, would really show that there is really a problem in this particular sport. Although most wrestlers may not admit that steroids and performance enhancing drugs are their best friend in the ring but the increasing number of dying wrestlers is an indicator.
The only thing that these pro wrestlers can do is warn fellow athletes on the risk involved in using any performance enhancing drugs. In an interview by Daily Star UK, WWE star Kane advised the young wrestlers to be careful with performance enhancing drugs or any substance abuse. He said the existing policy of WWE helps in solving these problem but new and young pro’s should still be careful. He considers WWE Wellness policy an effective program that prevent more tragic deaths in the sports. “I hate to harp on about it, but it’s something the young guys need to be aware of. WWE has taken a number of steps to be proactive, but all these things are tragic. I knew Andrew for years and years, since he was 24 or 25, so it’s personal too when you see that happen,” Kane added.
On the other hand, Mr. Kennedy criticizes the Wellness Program of WWE. It can be recalled that Mr. Kennedy was suspended in 2007 when he was reported in Sports Illustrated for receiving shipments of testosterone. He believes that the drug testing is too rigorous. He lamented that every time he comes for a TV taping, a drug test is already waiting for him.
In an interview with the U.K. Sun, Mr Kennedy said, “Testing is ridiculous. I swear it’s far more rigorous than the NFL. It seems like every time we go to TV, there’s a note on the door that says we’re testing. Do it on a weekly basis and it tends to be a bit much. I’m probably going to get myself in trouble here,” he said.
His order of testosterone from a supposedly licensed doctor is for the treatment of his medical condition. He said that his body is not producing its natural production of testosterone. Kennedy’s thought on his suspension was a b.s. “I feel I had a legitimate medical condition. Someone will say you’re not supposed to go online to get. I never went online once. Never. It was an actual guy who said he was a doctor who I got my stuff from,” he added.
Mr. Kennedy admitted that he had previously used steroid while still trying to get into World Wrestling Entertainment. “What happens is when you stop taking that stuff, your natural level of testosterone - you feel like s—. You can’t get out of bed in the morning. Your natural production of testosterone just stops.” That is the reason why he ordered testosterone to treat this condition.
He justified his use of steroids. Kennedy said, “If I’m not hurting anybody, what’s the big deal?” he asked rhetorically. “If I’m going to have health issues, I’m going to have health issues.”
Right now, Mr. Kennedy is still in the injury list. He is not yet a hundred percent ready to take part in WrestleMania 25. The shoulder injury that he got was in August last year but until now he doesn’t have full range of motion in his shoulder. Kennedy is under a physical therapist 3 times per week but he still feel great pain in the shoulder.
Once the House Bill 272 is approved at state senate, all Illinois high school athletes will undergo a random steroid testing. State Rep. Jack Franks proposed that the IHSA should prohibit a student from participating in an athletic competition sponsored or sanctioned by the association unless the student agrees not to use certain performance-enhancing substances.
Further, if the student is currently enrolled in high school, the student submits to random testing for the presence of these substances. This bill is not only focused on student athlete but also on coaches. It will also require high school coaches to complete an educational program on the prevention of abuse of performance-enhancing substances and to complete a proficiency exam.
The bill which got an unanimous approval in the House of Representative was voted 116-0. It was already passed to the state senate for approval and the governor for the final stage.
Under this bill, The (IHSA) Illinois High School Association would administer the drug testing. Although the IHSA has an existing drug testing policy, this would just expand its scope and implementation. Students that will be tested positive for steroids and other performance enhancing drugs will be prohibited from participating in any athletic competition for a certain period of time. Results of the tests will be kept confidential.
It also aim to randomly test more than 1000 students from all member schools of IHSA. They will be using urine samples to screen for any banned or prohibited substances that a student athlete may take.
What is good about this proposal is the fine that will be imposed to those students who will get positive results. Offenders will have to pay a fine of $50 for every positive result. This will help lessen the burden of the IHSA in shouldering the cost of drug tests.
IHSA executive director, Marty Hickman said that the existing performance-enhancing drug testing program has been a valuable deterrent thus far and they welcome any state assistance in helping to make this program even better.
According to state representative Franks, this bill aims to protect the students who may turn to steroids and other performance enhancing drugs just to be in the pro. “There’s much more pressure on them to perform more and more now. It’s lucrative for them to get scholarships.” Franks said that kids usually make decisions based on short term gains instead of what’s in their best long term interest.
Franks’ plan was influenced by the former University of Illinois and Chicago Bears Dick Butkus who introduced him to Don Hooton, an anti-steroid crusader. Don Hooton established the Taylor Hooton Foundation to educate the young athletes on steroid use. His son committed suicide as a result of steroid abuse. He is now asking more people to help him in his mission, including lawmakers to pass laws that will deter steroid use among teens.
After the controversial report from Sports Illustrated a few months ago that Alex Rodriguez is one of more than 100 players tested positive for steroids, another controversy is haunting the Yankees baseball star. He was a regular client of a madam and probably dated Kristin Davis.
Who is Kristin Davis? She is a high-priced former madam who provide prostitutes to rich clients which includes politicians. One of his client is the former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer. It caused Spitzer, who was referred to as client no. 9, to resign in disgrace. Right now, Davis is on 5 years probation after pleading guilty of promoting prostitution. She also served 3 months in jail as part of her sentence.
Based on reports, Davis also provided services to Alex Rodriguez and even dated him. A reporter had a proof that Alex Rodriguez did hire the services of Davis call girls and was able to establish a connection with Davis. These include emails which were supposedly came from Alex Rodriguez.
Some of the call girls interviewed admitted that they really provided services to A-Rod. Based on records, Rodriguez hired the call girls of Davis many times which started from 2006. He would meet the girls at the Four Seasons Hotel in Manhattan, New York. Rodriguez even used his real name when ordering the call girls.
According to a report from the Daily News, Davis said that throughout the years, there were a number of clients that she befriended and it was not uncommon for them to want the women they can’t have, whether it be the phone bookers or the madam. She also intimated that she was personally wooed by Rodriguez. When asked about the emails betweeen her and ARod, Davis replied that there are other people who have access to her client records as well as her personal information. She said that she can’t control what has been released.
Previous reports also linked Rodriguez to pop icon Madonna. Although the two have denied that they were in a romantic relationship. The divorce papers filed by his former wife, Cynthia showed that Rodriguez problem is infidelity.
For those who want to know more of Kristin Davis, more information can be found on her site manhattanmadam.com. Some of the information that is interesting on her website is her claim that she had provided services to a “roster of 10,000 rich, powerful and famous clients.” This would mean a lot of money. More of her secrets will be revealed in her book The Manhattan Madam.
With these reports on Alex Rodriguez, do we still have to put him on the list of baseball stars or to the Hall of Fame?
John Cena, a former WWE champion is making the media rounds this week to promote his new movie 12 Rounds which will be in theaters March 27. He made apperances with ESPN, MTV, FM stations and other publications. Most of his interviews focused on his personal life, as a pro wrestler, and being an actor. In an interview by MTV Movies Editor Josh Horowitz, Cena accepted the dare to take 12 rounds of ice cream and cakes for every question from the editor. In an invitation from a radio station, Cena showed his other skill which is in the field of music.
What makes it more interesting is not the movie he is promoting but his opinion on the steroid use in baseball. The former WWE star says Alex Rodriguez is an embarrassment to Yankees. For him, Alex Rodriguez should “go to jail” for using steroids. In an interview with the New York Daily News Cena said, “(Rodriguez) got defensive, saying he used because he felt he needed to. But if there was a set of (legal) stipulations in place he may never have even considered it.”
According to Cena, “The government should take the initiative, and if you get caught using drugs, then you should go to jail. A criminal record will hurt your endorsements and long-term contracts.”
Although Cena admitted that he is also a baseball fan. When asked in another interview, he tipped his hat to the Tampa Bay Rays but according to him Red Sox is still where his heart is because he grew up in that area.
Cena said that he will still be doing his job in WWE when asked if he is going to retire from the pro. However, he said that in playing a physical sport you should know when to retire. He told sfexaminer.com he loves wrestling because of the thrill of doing live television. “It’s so unpredictable. I love the fans, the spontaneity and the showmanship. I want to be a full-time actor and a full-time wrestler. There are stigmas attached to both, but they don’t concern me,” he said.
He also said that he never missed any WWE commitment. “I’m not about to start now. If you look at someone like The Rock, we get him to show up at an event maybe once a year. I’m going to be much more involved than that. I love being part of the WWE, and I can’t think of a single reason why I’d ever want to distance myself from it,” he added.
Cena’s role as action star starts with his first film “The Marine,” an action movie. Cena returns with “12 Rounds” which is produced by WWE studios. The movie is directed by Renny Harlin, who who also directed other blockbuster action films such as “Die Hard 2,” “Cliffhanger” and “Deep Blue Sea.”
John Cena is a 4-time WWE champion and an accomplished hip-hop star.
The death of Mexican wrestler Abismo Negro added to the increasing number of professional wrestlers dying at a young age. Abismo Negro which means Black Abyss is Andrés Alejandro Palomeque González. He died at the age of 37.
What makes his death a mystery to some is the fact that he was drowned in a river early in the morning. Gonzalez is aboard a bus going to Mexico City but later became agitated and panicked. He told the bus driver to let him off the bus. He eventually lost in the dark hillside since it is still 1:30 in the morning.
Abismo was able to text his wife about what was happening to him but that was his last communication. Worried about the condition of his husband, she contacted Gonzalez’ local wrestling promoter Vicente Martinez to search for his husband. The search for Abismo took time as they still have to ask people from the town and showed some pictures of Abismo to facilitate the search. Their search lead them to a river near El Rosario where they found the floating body of Gonzalez. Some speculated that Gonzalez might possibly trapped in the mud while crossing the river but was unable to escape and drowned.
Jesus Lopez, the local coroner said that the cause of death was an anxiety attack. This could be due to his anabolic steroid use which triggered the attack. Abismo had a bad reputation for his involvement on drug problems. Others are also saying that there might be a foul play in Abismo’s death. It is still not clear whether the authorities will conduct a separate investigation on the incident.
Abismo Negro started his career with AAA in Mexican wrestling which is being broadcast on a local television. His other stints include playing with CMLL and NOAH in Japan. He also had a few appearances in US wrestling like in WWF in 1997 Royal Rumble and RAw. He was also part of Team Mexico during TNA Wrestling’s 2004 World X-Cup.
Another professional wrestler passed away last weekend, Steve Doll, 44. He was hospitalized in 2007 after having a seizure related to an intestinal blockage. He was placed on life support for years and his family decided to remove him from his ventilator.
Steve Doll became a star when he partnered with Rex King in the 1990’s. They called themselves the Southern Rockers in 1989. As a tag team, Doll and King had a good chemistry. They were known as Steven Dunn and Timothy Well a.k.a. “Well Dunn” in WWE. They worked in WWF from 1993 – 1995. Doll was also given a chance to fight as an undercard for World Championship Wrestling in 1996 – 1997.
