UFC’s Ken Shamrock Busted for Three Steroid Positives
The Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) Hall of Famer and mixed martial arts veteran, Ken Shamrock, was once billed as the “world’s most dangerous man” and is one of the most respected fighters in the history of the sport. However, at 44, all of his successes and accomplishments may tumble down and prove a fraud in the face of a recent steroid testing where he came out positive for three kinds of banned substances.
Shamrock was drug tested by the California State Athletic Commission after his victorious fight at a Wardogs event against 360-pound journeyman Ross Clifton and the results came out positive for three forms of banned substances. Shamrock was fined $2500 and suspended for one year. The banned drugs that were found present in his system included 19-Noretiocholanolone, 19-Norandrosterone, and Stanozolol. Shamrock’s victory against Clifton may mark the end of his career with the UFC. His win ended at a five-five skid. For his last fight, Shamrock was paid $25,000.
Attorney Rod Donohoo, Shamrock’s manager, says that Shamrock vehemently denies the steroid allegations and that he will appeal his suspension. Donohoo claims that what Shamrock was taking were over-the-counter legal products and based on their preliminary research, he is investigating if the products used resulted to the positive test results. He was essentially saying that the over-the-counter supplements caused a false positive (for three substances?!).
Ken Shamrock was scheduled to fight ex-WWE professional wrestler Bobby Lashley in Florida supposedly this March but that fight is most likely canceled as a suspension in one U.S. State athletic commission typically carries over to all the other states. There are two possible opponents for Lashley, now that Shamrock is out of the game: Mixed Martial Arts legend Don Frye and former heavyweight boxing champion Hasim Rahman. Lashley was offered up with both contenders by the Jones’ Square Ring and he accepted to go against either of the renowned fighters, which shows some real courage. Lashley is a champion college wrestler with little experience in Mixed Martial Arts. It was reported that Square Ring prefers to use Rahman, who is 36 years old and well past his prime but younger than Frye who is 46.
Ken Shamrock is a legend in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. He came from the Pancrase Japanese shoot wrestling circuit, and competed at the very first UFC event held in 1993. During that event, he came out strongly and went all the way to the finals but was finally beaten by Brazilian jiu-jitsu master Royce Gracie. After that, Shamrock became a mainstay of the UFC and went on to claiming the UFC Superfight title off Dan Severn at the UFC 6. Shamrock’s UFC career nose-dived after a series of fights with lightweight champion Tito Ortiz, where Shamrock was beaten three times. The Shamrock-Ortiz fights were one of the most renowned feuds in the history of the sport.
Many UFC fans were disappointed with the recent news about Shamrocks involvement with illegal drugs. Donohoo gave his statement to the press saying that Shamrock, the “world’s most dangerous man” is prepared to do another immediate re-testing to prove that he is innocent.
