Convicted Steroid Dealer Confirms McGwire Used Steroids to Enhance Performance
If Mark McGwire received criticism for his late admission of steroids use, the recent interview with his steroid supplier will make his situation more complicated. In an interview by ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” to be aired on Sunday, Curtis Wenzlaff said that the slugger used steroids to enhance his performance. This is in contradiction with McGwire’s statement that his use of steroids for almost a decade were only for medical reasons like the treatment of his injuries. The steroid dealer said that the goal of McGwire is to become bigger, faster, and stronger which makes him one of the best home run hitter in baseball. He believes that the baseball star was less truthful on his confession about steroid use.
In TJ Quinn’s interview, Wenzlaff admitted that he laughed at McGwire’s confession. To quote one of his statements, “I chuckled. Let me put it this way. If excelling and kicking ass on the field is the end result I guess that’s a healthy, good feeling. But for health, there are other things you can take for health that are anabolic, but it wouldn’t be that type of combination.”
Wenzlaff revealed that McGwire was one of his clients since the late 1980’s. Jose Canseco is also one of the baseball players connected to the steroid dealer. Five years ago, McGwire was already implicated in steroid use by Wenzlaff. It was published in the NY Daily News by Quinn. Wenzlaff claimed that he provided a drug recipe to McGwire specifically 1/2 cc of testosterone cypionate every three days; one cc of testosterone enanthate per week; 3/4 cc of equipoise and Winstrol V, every three days. “Let me put it to you this way. If Paris Hilton was to take that array, she could run over Dick Butkus,” Wenslaff told Quinn. If the statements of Wenzlaff are true, McGwire’s records were really pumped up with steroids. According to the convicted steroid dealer, the combination of anabolic steroids given to McGwire could help him improve his hand and eye coordination. As a result this could make him a better hitter. “When you implement into what you are doing- for instance, hitting; an individualized, specialized program with muscle growth and explosiveness while you’re on your drugs, it will improve your hand-eye coordination,” Wenslaff said.
During the Operation Equine, headed by former FBI agent Greg Stejkal, Wenslaff was implicated in large scale distribution of anabolic steroids to professional athletes. He was then arrested by agents on July 7, 1992. The 5 year investigation led to the arrests and conviction of more than 70 individuals and entities involved in steroid. Stejkal wrote last week that they discovered the widespread use of anabolic steroid in major league baseball during their investigation. In fact they already notified the league but the latter did not do any action to address the problem. The name of McGwire came out in the investigation but charges were not made since the operation was focused on steroid dealers and distributors.
McGwire returned into baseball late last year when he was hired again by the St. Louis Cardinals as a hitting coach. With this latest revelation on his steroid use, McGwire’s PR man should immediately plan on how to counter the effects of Wenslaff’s interview.
